Building Vocabulary Without Tears
Flashcards, reading lists, and word games. A comprehensive guide to expanding an 11-year-old's vocabulary.

Building Vocabulary Without Tears
A vast vocabulary is the absolute cornerstone of 11+ success. It isn't just required for the English comprehension and creative writing segments; it is strictly tested in Verbal Reasoning (VR) through synonyms, antonyms, cloze tests, and odd-one-out puzzles.
But handing an 11-year-old a dictionary and asking them to memorize words is a guaranteed recipe for tears.
The Limit of Rote Learning
Traditional flashcards quickly fall into the trap of 'rote learning'. A child might be able to recite that 'melancholy' means 'sad', but if they don't understand the context or the nuance of the word, they will fail to use it correctly in a sentence or miss it when an exam asks for an 'implied' meaning.
Context is King
The absolute best way to build vocabulary is through wide, high-quality reading. Classic literature (like Dickens, C.S. Lewis, or modernized classics) exposes children to rich language in context.
However, reading alone takes time—time that 11+ candidates don't always have.
Active Word Mechanics: Etymology
Teach your child the building blocks of words: stems, prefixes, and suffixes. If a child knows that the Latin root 'mal' means 'bad' or 'evil', they don't need to have ever seen the words malicious, malevolent, or malfunction to guess their approximate meaning in a multiple-choice question.
The Bit1 Approach: Spaced Repetition
In Bit1's 'Secret Sauce' tools, we utilize Flash Envelopes. This isn't just flashcards—it's an intelligent Spaced Repetition System (SRS). When a child plays our vocabulary sorting games, the algorithm learns which words they struggle with and re-introduces them just as they are about to forget them. Those they master are pushed further back in the rotation.
Furthermore, words aren't learned in isolation; they are tied to images, synonyms, and context sentences, cementing them deeply into long-term memory while keeping the process incredibly fun.
